People Skills versus Formal Education in Good Country...
People Skills versus Formal Education in Good Country People by Flannery OConnor Never let your schooling get in the way of your education -Mark Twain Good Country People, by Flannery Oââ¬â¢Connor, presents us with a look into the monotonous lives of three women living together on a rural farm. All three women are set in their old-fashioned ways, having experienced very little of life, out on the farm. A bible salesman named Manley Pointer, appearing like nothing more than simple, good country people(1), pays them a visit one day. It turns out that this simple countryboy is actually a brilliant con artist who scams the pretentious daughter, Hulga (also known as Joy) into removing her wooden leg, which he proceeds toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Hulga has very little interaction with anyone at all, besides her mother and their tenant Mrs. Freeman. Hulga failed to see the idea shown in the above Mark Twain quote. Hulga, throughout her life has been starved for affection and loving attention. Pointer is able to get her to succumb to his wishes so easily because she is amazed that someone sincerely wants to be with her, or so it seems. Ever since she was ten, she has had her wooden stump leg, and her heart problem to live with. More recently, Hulgaââ¬â¢s weight problem is another obstacle that adds to her isolation. Combined with her condescending attitude, these encumbrances have succeeded to separate her from mainstream society. Pointer realizes this and is able to use it to his advantage; he knows all the right things to say to her. In the hayloft, Hulga hears fond admiration for what is quite possibly one of the first times in her life. As a result, the customarily very independent, strong-willed Hulga is completely under the control of an uneducated man half her age. Itââ¬â¢s what makes you different. You ainââ¬â¢t like anybody elseâ⬠¦.She decided that for the first t ime in her life, she was face to face with real innocence. This boy, with an instinct that came beyond wisdom, had touched the truth about her(404). Pointer is one of the few people in her life who was able to see the real Hulga; he saw through the cold faà §ade. Thanks to Mr. Pointer, Hulga

RFID TAGS Introduction Over time, the ways products have been tracked through the supply chain have changed just as technology is constantly progressing. Yet, there are still constraints to improve the methods of tracking and shipping due to the lack of technology in these fields. Bar codes have helped but still need human interference. We will write a custom essay sample on Rfid Tags or any similar topic only for you Order Now Many companies are starting to turn to radio frequency identification tags. RFID tags can help companies with tracking and shipment of any product and reduce time to improve customer satisfaction. Wolff, 2001) Companies such as IBM who are producing the tags have started to think of ideas to revolutionize this plan. The RFID tags can help track products as they enter and leave warehouses, and can speed up the shipping process. They can be put into different products and even use them in such ways as at the grocery store instead of having cashiers and cash registers. (Wolff, 2001) The superstore, JC Penney, is interested in taking advancements with the RFID tags. These tags are programmable and cannot get damaged like barcodes can. In the 21st century, we are constantly moving forward with such innovations. The RFID tags are currently in use by some companies already, and being modified by others for their particular needs. These tags could open doors for many new inventions and help us progress into a faster-moving and progressing world. Background Radio frequency identification has been said to go as far back as World War II. Countries were using it for tracking planes and other means of transportation by radar. The major super powers of World War II such as America, Japan, and Germany, all had been using this technology. Germany was the first to discover that the sound wave would change depending on how their pilots came back to base. This helped them determine whether enemies or their own pilots were coming into their territory. (Roberti) From this, scientists kept progressing with different types of radiofrequency tags to identify sole objects. From the advancement in this form of technology, anti-theft tags were created, which sends a signal when it is not paid for and someone tries to leave the store with this item. The US government has also been working with RFID tags with tracking nuclear supplies, along with rucks to help while delivering different things. (Roberti) The tags are being used today in major companies such as Wal-Mart, to track products throughout the supply chain. EZPASS is probably the best example of usage of the RFID tags. Mobil Exxon currently uses RFID tags with their ââ¬Å"speed pass. â⬠This speed pass allows customers to buy petrol without using any method of curre ncy. The RFID transponder takes the identification number of the customer and then charges the amount to an existing credit card. Roberti) The RFID are in use majorly today and are going to keep advancing through time. Potential Benefits The expansion of the radiofrequency in and of itself is a huge accomplishment for society, and all around the world. These tags can help with tracking products, quicker payments, decrease waiting for customers, healthcare, medicine, and so much more. EZPASS uses these tags already and decreases travel time because they have ââ¬Å"EZPASS onlyâ⬠lanes when paying tolls. The RFID tags can be smaller than someoneââ¬â¢s fingernail but can still be tracker anywhere. Hopefully over time, these tags will take the place of all barcodes and will not need human interference. Grocery stores can use these tags in their products to just bill you through the scanner as you leave the store, which IBM suggests. You can see a commercial of this in an IBM commercial for their RFID tags and what they can bring. That would just be the beginning, since now they are suggesting injecting patients with RFID during their surgical implants to detect healing processes. Innovapaedicsââ¬â¢ long-term (approximately five-year) goal is to offer a ââ¬ËSmart Implantââ¬â¢ solution that would include RFID tags and sensors permanently attached to implants. After an item is implanted into a patient, its RFID sensors would detect pressure and temperature changes, among other events, in order to track a patientââ¬â¢s healing process, as well as the deviceââ¬â¢s condition, and transmit that information to a reader. â⬠(Swedberg, 2003) Legal and Ethical Issues/S ecurity Concerns Many of the problems with the RFID tags is the privacy issues and concerns that may come into play. These tags could be used to benefit everyone but could also be used to harm. If they are going to be used in more and more products and maybe even into people for health-related purposes, this raises concerns for governments across the globe, as well as their citizens. Such worries could be the fear of data being intercepted from a third party, or the rights of a person being violated by accessing private information. (Legal issues) The tags could be used to spread viruses, breaching confidential data, or to gain unfair advantages in business to get a lead on the competition. Legal issues) Tags could also be used to track people with the tagged items, which could lead them to credit accounts and help with fraud. (Legal issues) Also, the tags could help lead to corruption and destruction of one whole RFID network if it gains access to one tag and breaks in. If these RFID tags are injected into people for surgical purposes or for other things in the future, can they get viruses do to t he computer chip? These are all issues that need to be resolved or find consequences for such things. Social Problems Many of the problems with the RFID tags all relate back to privacy. These tags can be tracked at great distances, while sometime the user of the product has no knowledge of the tag being there. These chips can be in phones, as well as other electrical items. With the knowledge of these tags, people can stalk other people if they gain access to the RFID network for that item and tag number on the item being utilized by someone else. As stated here, ââ¬Å"The concern increases as information related to a variety of objects becomes linkable to the identity of their users thus adding data of a personal nature to the data that is being stored and exchanged. In addition, if such data is used to create profiles their useà may limit the freedom of choice of users and lead to opaque decision making about individuals. â⬠(Royer) This shows that there is a way to access personal information which could create major problems with identity theft and other things alike. These tags, when implanted into a humanââ¬â¢s body, could have a defect or change a personââ¬â¢s nervous system, or chemical balance. This could lead to different perception, different thought process, or could seriously injure a human or cause them to do something irrational which they wouldnââ¬â¢t normally do. Conclusion The radiofrequency identification tags can be used to benefit the way the world works through the supply chain, and much more. This could literally change the way we live day to day life if we allow it. The tags are already being used by EZPASS and at Mobil Exxon stations. If funded right, these could be used for products in our grocery stores so shoppers donââ¬â¢t have to wait on line to pay for groceries. These types of chips and tags are already being used for cows and pets when they go astray, so their owners can find them with a form of a transponder. There are also problems with these tags that someone could put a virus in place and manage to destroy the network and hack into peopleââ¬â¢s personal information. This could also be utilized for terrorism with different countries such as in the past with the transportation of the nuclear materials. A lot of work needs to be done but with the right resources and workers to put this into action, they can use the tags to help the world become a more convenient place. Market Orientation and Business Performance â⬠MyAssignmenthelp.com
Question: Discuss about the Market Orientation and Business Performance. Answer: Introduction: Franchising is the business format where a company allows another firm to sell and market its products within a specified geographical area. The first party is called franchisor while the second party is called franchisee. The relationship between franchisor and franchisee is governed by written contracts between them which specify the terms and conditions of it. The business model is very successful because it encourages new business firms to sell and market branded products of other firms and earn high profit. This model has emerged as a successful foreign expansion strategy and is followed in a number of industries like fast food by international companies like KFC. The model no doubt is the theme of several literary articles and internal magazines. Franchising is based on contract between the franchisor and the franchisee. The contract mentions important conditions like sharing of profit, franchising fees and provision of training to the franchisees staffs, if any (Buchan et al., 2015). Thus it creates a transparent framework which enforces the two parties carry out dynamic business operations which ensures capital maximization for both. Perigot Pnard (2013) in their work state that internet has allowed the franchisors locate franchisees in the foreign markets more easily. This enriches the literature of the internal magazine and adds new matter to it. The franchisors and the franchisee can communicate more easily over the internal platform through video conference and hold meetings to handle urgent situations. This allows the international fast food brands like KFC to manage and collaborate with their franchisees on a larger scale and ensure deeper market penetration even in the foreign markets. KFC follows business model fra nchises and allows the franchisee to market the products and the trademark. Lam et al., (2014) while discussing the advantages of the model in his work stated that franchising results in the flow of foreign goods and capital in the host countries. The franchisee is able to market the products of KFC and earn high profits. KFC is able to market its high quality products like chicken snacker and burger through the franchisee. KFC follow a very intelligent strategy to ensure that it is able to serve a huge customer base and earn profit high profit simultaneously. Stahel and Clift (2016) in their work add that franchising helps the saturated economies to gain foreign resources which help to accelerate economic development. The work of Lee (2016) further strengthens the literature of Lam et al through his work. KFC uses scientific process of preparing tasty food products which creates customer satisfaction. The fast food chains like KFC promote their products through existing menu, gift coupons, KFC Tshirts and large display outside the outlet. Thus franchisee mo del accommodates a strong marketing model which allows the franchisor and the franchisee to earn huge profit. van Tongeren and Stolwijk, (2013) says that KFC markets its products and receives orders online and hence helps the ecommerce companies to earn revenue. It appears it is one way scope to earn profit given to the ecommerce companies by KFC. However, it is two way relationships between KFC and ecommerce companies where both profit. Eriksson Tenflt (2015) state that ecommerce provides a sales platform which allows franchisors like KFC to sell their products globally to earn huge profits. Ecommerce companies like Amazon provides the companies like KFC a platform to promote their products and enhance their brand image. Thus, the ecommerce companies and the producing companies help each other to earn huge profits. Franchising as a business model has great significance because it creates value for the stakeholders and maximizes capital of the shareholders. The fact draws strength from the work of Maak, Boreck Pless (2014). They state in their work that franchising model ensures operation in responsible ways to meet the demands of all the stakeholders like government, customers, employees and shareholders. KFC manages its franchisees after its own international business model which ensures that they provide customers with world class food items and services befitting the fame of KFC. The franchisor maintains a high quality core product like great taste, highly quality chicken and spices and so on. The KFC products applie optional pricing and mixed bundling pricing. The products of KFC are affordable to customers and they come in combinations which increases the customers value of money. The staffs at KFC outlets are well trained and attend to customers in professional ways. Thus franchisee mode l has helped KFC to make and sustain a great trade mark and brand name. Zhang, Lawrence Anderson (2015) state in their literary work that franchising model involves and benefit three primary stakeholders, the franchisor, the franchisee and the customers. The franchising model creates employment opportunities and generates revenue which help the government and the investors respectively. KFC partners with franchisees all over the world which generates revenue for both making it one of the most sought after international franchisors in the world (Kacker et al., 2016). Rhou, Singal and Koh (2016) state that today franchisor model followed by KFC has transcended the profit earning motive and are actively promoting social development. KFC necessitates its franchisees to take part in social initiatives which promotes strengthening of their brand image. The international fast food chain is already working with the United Nations and helping it to combat hunger and poverty. It is working with several governments supporting their initiatives to bring about socia l development. KFC provides the same meal quality that comes with a diverse menu, focusing on the chicken rather instead of the hamburgers. KFC have been broadening their menu assortment over a certain period of time, adjusting its menu to the local tastes. KFCs scale of production has been associated with cost savings procedures for a standardized menu; the idea being the larger the scale of production, the lower the cost allocated for per menu. Successful chains of franchisee generally begin with the proper business model, proceeding with accretion of the exact scale and scope within the proper locations, until they have reaching the optimum saturation level of the market. The franchising model of operation has allowed KFC to spread its business all over the world. The company is a public company which can generate huge capital from the market using its brand value as a security to the investors(kfc.com, 2017). The company is able to hold its high brand value owing to the high revenue it earns from the chain of franchisees it has all over the world. It is no doubt that the company is looking forward to increase its franchisee chain which has a great future (yum.com, 2017). The franchisees provide the important information about the changing customer tastes and preference to the franchisor. The franchisor can introduce the product lines according to the tastes of the markets in question to satisfy the customers better. For example, KFC provides burgers wraps, chicken, all in the box, buckets, salads sauces, side dishes, desserts and kids items as menu in Germany. The same fast food chain offers make your own bucket (MYOB), chicken, burgers, rice bowlz, snacks and beverages. The different food items actually cater to the needs of the markets like India is consumed both as a part of staple diet and fast food dishes. These product differentiation strategies combined with the great product and marketing maximizes customer satisfaction. The combination of items offered by KFC through its franchisees at affordable prices increase the value to customers money. It is no doubt that fast food chains like KFC enjoys a huge customer loyalty in the market. The fast food chain offers total product which maximizes customer satisfaction. The customers can distinguish the distinct taste and quality of KFC from its competitors. Thus, franchising model helps the multinational fast food chains like KFC to sell their total products in the whole world and earn high profit. This market strategies of KFC has led to the success of the franchisee model of the fast food chain internationally. Franchising is a very successful business model and foreign expansion strategy. The essence of this model is not restricted to mutual profit anymore. The model is capable of maximization the value of the key stakeholders which has led to its success and adoption by the international companies like KFC. It offers high quality products, thus benefitting the customers. The franchisee model helps the international fast food chain to market its product all over the world. The products are of high quality and follow the high brand value of KFC. KFC promotes its products through its franchisees and advertises its value enhancing products. The marketing strategy of KFC through its franchisee chain has led to generating high profit for both the parties. Conclusion: The strong marketing strategy and the alignment of products with it results in high customer satisfaction. The company no doubt has a huge consumer base worldwide to love to consume KFC products. Restaurants have been successfully expanding in the global basis along with locally with the use of the franchisee model. For instance, KFC, Taco Bell and McDonalds having been making the best use of this franchise model. In this franchise business sculpt, the franchisor and the franchisee have been entering into the contractual conformity in selling the branded products of the franchisor. It is the franchisee who takes the lumber of improving the restaurant, overseeing the regular operations along with managing of the cost for administering the restaurant. Due to the elimination of the operational cost, the margins are generally elevated for the franchisor. The benefits for making use of this model is to take in the opportunity in expanding faster as the franchisee offers the capital in mak ing the restaurant equipped for the purpose of the operations. The franchisor generally faces lower amount of risk if the store is being underperforming. KFC would be having more time in focusing on the product and operational research and spending of less amount of time on the purpose of execution. As the restaurant is being owned by the franchisee who is generally the highest motivated part in making the restaurant a success, it eradicates the issue of agency. The franchise is as good as the boss of the restaurant, whose capital is generally being employed in the restaurant. The only downside of this model that KFC might find is the company having less power over the work procedure of the management. References: 2016 Yum! Brands Annual Report. (2017). Yum.com. Market Orientation and Business Performance ââ¬â MyAssignmenthelp.com Question: Discuss about the Market Orientation and Business Performance. Answer: Introduction QuiznosSub Sandwich Restaurants arefamous for their Toasted Sandwiches and other build-your-own subs as well as soups and salads. Their headquarters is in Denver, Colorado established since 1981. They filed for bankruptcy back in 2014 as they were running out of business meanwhile Subway and Potbelly were making their way to the top. Quiznos had around 5000 stores in the United States back in the early 2000s and they were at their peak but then later on, around 2000 of their outlets were closed dues to recession and competition. This report shall discuss the marketing strategies of Quiznos and their flaws (Davenport et al. 2014). Coming back from its bankruptcy, Quiznos started making some changes in their advertising strategies. They started splitting their budgets between print media and digital marketing. They have been more inclined towards the print media advertising rather than digital marketing. The benefits derived out of these digital platforms have pushed a lot of brands towards success. Although recently they have been trying to emphasize on digital media more than the print media, their strategies have not been up to the mark and they are losing the race to their competitors. Their target audience includes male and female from the age of 18 to 34. The primary target audience is the middle class white collar segment which is the largest segment of class in the United States (McAlister et al. 2016). Quiznos have to understand the needs of their customer and figure out a better way to reach out to their potential customers like other companies have been doing in the recent past. Framing a better marketing strategy on how to make the most out of the digital media should be their primary concern. This report shall discuss about the areas where Quiznos have been struggling as compared to other companies like their social media campaigns and strategies. The Quiznos website is not really that attractive as compared to Subways website. Quiznos did not really focus on the fact that their website needs to be attractive, user friendly and offers deals that draws potential visitors. In todays world, the digital marketing tools need to be used in the maximum possible ways. The marketing strategies followed by Quiznos are a little dull and lacks that appealing factor that a product needs as far as the reach is concerned (Parente, D. and Strausbaugh-Hutchinson 2014). While analysing their social media platforms like for example, their Facebook page, Quiznos are not really that active with their branding on the social media. The number of likes Quiznos has, the difference is a story in itself. Analysis their Facebook page, Quiznos has just around 1.4 Million likes shows how far behind Quiznos are in terms of digital marketing and reaching out to people. Quiznos needs to make sure they are not staying behind and generate that buzz. The shifting of print media era to digital marketing was going to be a major factor for most of the brands out there. Quiznos had to make sure they are not staying behind but they could not manage to generate that buzz that other brands did. A company needs to explore all its options when it comes to marketing their products. They need to offer new schemes to their customers so as to keep them hooked to their sandwiches and other food products. The new brands on the other hand kept their customers attracted and offered various deals with their subs. Quiznos will have to recover a lot and follow the current marketing trend so as to utilise their resources in a better way. Digital marketing is a very brilliant tool only if it has been used in such manner (Lee et al. 2015). The marketing strategies followed by subway are quite sharp and targets their audience unlike Quiznos. Subway makes sure that they are posting enough to reach out as much as possible. If you compare the number of likes Subway has got on their social media page with the number of likes Quiznos has, the difference is a story in itself. While Subway managed to get approximately 25 Million likes on their Facebook page, Quiznos has just around 1.4 Million likes. For instance, Subway has been offering toys for kids in their every meal. This attracts a lot of kids obviously alongwith their parents which seems to be very smart move and Quiznos is not doing anything of this sort. Subways marketing team has a brilliant way of making a comeback offering something new to their customers where as Quiznos is still using their old tagline. Conclusion Conclusively, it is quite evident that Quiznos are way behind in terms of their digital marketing strategies and they need to work a lot on their marketing strategies. People nowadays are spending more time online than going out. The customers are not going come, you have to reach out to them and Quiznos need to learn that from Subway. They need to be more active on their social media platforms so as to cover up the gap they have been dealing with. References McAlister, L., Srinivasan, R., Jindal, N. and Cannella, A.A., 2016. Anorexia Nervosa Essays (2004 words) - Eating Disorders,
Anorexia Nervosa Anorexia Nervosa is a very serious disease that is plaguing many young people in our society. This is something that is becoming more and more prevalent. It is something that should not be taken lightly. I have chosen to do my Science report on this topic, because it is something intriguing and it is found in many teens. This is a topic that is too foreign to many people and they need to be educated on the subject. I hope to help that in anyway I can. In the following paragraphs I will discuss the warning signs of anorexia, the people affected by the disease, the disease itself, and certain types of treatments for the disorder. Firstly, I would like to discuss the warning signs of an eating disorder. The physical symptoms are much easier to identify, so I will start with them. The first and most obvious sign is extreme weight loss, which you can easily identify. To try and conceal this the anorexic will start to wear baggy clothing in an attempt to conceal the weight loss. An anorexic will also make every attempt to avoid a situation where food or meals are served. Times like this will be very uncomfortable to them, because it leaves them vulnerable to questions about their eating habits. This is something they want to avoid at all costs. Another part of avoiding meals is to prepare big meals for groups of people and eat very little. The anorexic will give excuses like, "I'm to tired to eat," or, "No, that's okay you should just eat. I prepared it for you." This let's them off the hook in their own mind. They make it look as they are too tired after all the hard work they have put in and usually nobody draws attention to it. An anorexic may also start to lose hair on their head or begin to grow finer hair on the body. This is one sign that you will want to look for if you have the opportunity. It will be a very accurate sign of an eating disorder. Also, a person with an eating disorder will show different types of emotional and mental symptoms. A few of the more obvious symptoms are depression, being grouchy, temperamental, and withdrawal. These are the most common signs of a person with anorexia. However, you must be very careful when assuming that a person has an eating disorder. It should not be confused with mood swings caused by trouble with friends or at home. These symptoms are usually with the person most of the time, not just periodically. They are usually accompanied by some of the physical signs. There are a few other signs that an anorexic person may have but are hard to identify with such as fear of gaining weight and perfectionist tendencies. These are harder to identify because they can be confused with other feelings or easily concealed. You should not confuse goal setting and high aspirations with perfectionist tendencies and if the person exercises daily it does not mean they are afraid of weight gain. By using common sense you can easily identify if a person has signs that are serious. That is the time you need to take action. In closing, there are many ways to identify an eating disorder, but you must do it with carefulness and thinking. Next, I will talk about the people that are most commonly affected by anorexia and who is most likely to get it. So far, I have talked about the different warning signs that you will find in anorexia. Now I will talk about what type of people to look for it in and it will give you a better idea of a person that could have it. The first thing I would like to make clear, is that any person can have an eating disorder. Statistics show different groups with anorexia, but the truth is that anyone can develop anorexia. After surveys, doctors have found that the age group where you will most commonly find anorexic people is between the ages of 13 to 21. Doctor's believe that these people are more at risk because of being exposed to people that are very judgmental and analyze them. This makes the person feel that they have to stay a certain way for the people around them. In other words, these people are afraid of being rejected by their peers for being too fat. The age groups can vary from as young as

5 Sentences in Need of Commas 5 Sentences in Need of Commas 5 Sentences in Need of Commas By Mark Nichol Commas signal delineation in sentences, sometimes showing the break point between two thoughts and sometimes marking the beginning and end of a phrase inserted in the midst of a sentence. Here are five sentences in which a single comma, or the second of an inseparable pair, is missing, with revisions and explanations. 1. ââ¬Å"Even when he was caught, some say he was plotting.â⬠The phrase ââ¬Å"some sayâ⬠is an interjection in the midst of the statement ââ¬Å"Even when he was caught, he was plotting.â⬠It is not enough to merely insert the phrase; one must bracket it in commas (the first of which supersedes the original comma, the function of which is to separate the sentenceââ¬â¢s two clauses): ââ¬Å"Even when he was caught, some say, he was plotting.â⬠2. ââ¬Å"Sorry guys, sheââ¬â¢s married.â⬠When directing a comment at readers, the writer must set off with commas the word or words used to identify the audience: ââ¬Å"Sorry, guys, sheââ¬â¢s married.â⬠(Otherwise, the writer appears to be addressing guys who are sorry though they are sorry if theyââ¬â¢re thinking they have a chance with the woman in question, so the erroneous version almost works.) The sentence is further improved by distinguishing the internal punctuation to enhance the impact of the statement: ââ¬Å"Sorry, guys sheââ¬â¢s married.â⬠3. ââ¬Å"Now thereââ¬â¢s a formula for ethical quandary.â⬠Terms that are located at the beginning of a sentence and that refer to time (now, soon, before, afterward, and so on) may or may not, depending on their function, be followed by a comma, but in this case, in which now is used as a meaningless interjection and the emphasis is on the expletive thereââ¬â¢s, it is essential: ââ¬Å"Now, thereââ¬â¢s a formula for ethical quandary.â⬠Otherwise, the statement reads like a pitch from a television commercial for a shampoo formulated to eradicate ethical quandary. (Now, that would be a hot-selling product.) 4. ââ¬Å"Residents decide driving, and shorter trips to places like Canada are safer options.â⬠The phrase referring to travel to Canada is an interjection inserted into ââ¬Å"Residents decide driving is the safer option,â⬠with a change in the verb is and conversion of the singular option to the plural options to accommodate the additional choice: ââ¬Å"Residents decide driving, and shorter trips to places like Canada, are safer options.â⬠(Note that if the conjunction and were replaced with or, the verb and the form of the noun would remain singular: ââ¬Å"Residents decide driving, or shorter trips to places like Canada, is a safer option.â⬠) Alternatively, the sole comma in the original version could be omitted (ââ¬Å"Residents decide driving and shorter trips to places like Canada are safer optionsâ⬠), but that revision changes the sense somewhat, turning a parenthetical aside into an integral part of the statement. 5. ââ¬Å"This city knows how to create high-rise neighborhoods while San Francisco just talks about it.â⬠Without a comma between the two clauses in this sentence, it reads as if one city has the knowledge about how to create high-rise neighborhoods during the time San Francisco just talks about it. But the meaning is that while San Francisco dawdles, the other city does: ââ¬Å"This city knows how to create high-rise neighborhoods, while San Francisco just talks about it.â⬠While is not used here to mean ââ¬Å"at the same time,â⬠denoting a continuation of one thought; it is a synonym for whereas, and the comma signals a new thought. Jean Watson's theory on caring is adopted in many aspects of nursing Essay
Jean Watson's theory on caring is adopted in many aspects of nursing. Listen to the monologue by Dr Watson. What does this mean - Essay Example 98). This emphasizes transcendence of nursing practice from mere physical healing to spiritual one. Historically, transition of nursing practice and healing in past decades evolved within margins of caring value and away from it (Daniels, 2003). The act of caring, then, is no longer central in nursing dynamics, as evident in current times. At this point, the monologue gives clear perspectives on what had been missing in the delivery of nursing service. Caring serves as essential tool that makes nursing unique from other medical professions. As direct providers of medical attention, students and registered nurses alike need to project empathetic attitudes, tempered by caring behaviors--as primary strengths in nursing service. Indeed, the monologue sheds light to the weakened area in nursing--lack of healing in the soul by way of caring. In account, nurses have to integrate elements of holistic care in their practice, in order to be both efficient and effective in their field of expert ise--constantly considering the status of clients in the midst of professional practice. Therefore, the monologue seeks to exhibit that nursing is not only the embodiment of a profession that heals the physical body; more importantly, it seeks to tap the spiritual being of every client. Enhancements in care, thereby, need to be reapplied in nursing practice, as had been originally intended from the beginning of the profession. References Basavanthappa, B. T.

Explain how firms try to extract consumer surplus using two-part Essay
Explain how firms try to extract consumer surplus using two-part tariffs - Essay Example Consumer Surplus and two part tariffs Monopolist firms are always associated to price discrimination and two-part pricing. Monopoly market structure is a form of market structure in which there is only one consumer and several producers. The monopolists are able to effect two part tariffs because they have the market power and because the consumers have inelastic demand curve. Market power, on the other hand, refers to the firmââ¬â¢s ability to raise the price of a commodity in the market over the marginal cost of producing the good in order to increase profit. The monopolists who act as price makers in the market without losing their customers or decreasing their sales majorly enjoys market power. The goods produced in these markets are very essential to people and that is why they still purchase the goods when their prices increase (Perloff, 2012). Market power is majorly brought about by barriers to entry to the new firms by monopolists. Elasticity is an important factor when o ne wants to determine market power and this depends on the shape of the demand curve where the price is raised above the marginal cost curve by the firm. It is given by the equation below: Price/Marginal cost= price elasticity of demand/ (1 + price elasticity of demand) Elasticity is affected greatly by availability of substitutes in that the more substitutes a good has, the more elastic the commodity is likely to be. Lastly, time affects elasticity as it takes time for consumers to react to the changes in price of goods. It has been observed that the demand for goods may be inelastic in the short run but elastic in the end due to price increase (Goolsbee & Syverson, 2013). Two critical conditions should be satisfied for the two-part tariff to hold. The first condition is that the supplier must have market power and the other is that the producer should be able to control access to the market. According to Pindyck & Rubinfeld (2009) in case where there is only one type of consumers who have the same demand curve then firms captures the concept of consumer prices through setting the price that is equal to marginal cost. Moreover, the fixed fee is set at point where it is equal to the consumer surplus of individual consumer price. Ordinarily, the consumer would charge price Pm and produce quantity Qm which accords the firm a profit shown by region B. However, due to two part pricing the firm will charge price Pc and a fixed charge of ABC making the firm to increase its profit to ABC. By charging price Pc the firm will extract all the surplus and realize increase in profits by AC. Figure 1: the figure shows how consumer surplus is obtained when demand is homogeneous; the diagram applies for each consumer In case there are two types of consumers and all the consumers within the same group possess the same demand curve then the only way to capture consumer surplus is through maximizing the profit function with respect to the price. The firms can attain the consumer surplus in two ways with two kinds of consumers. The first way to attain consumer surplus is through selling to high yield customers (Goolsbee & Syverson, 2013). High yield customers are charged a price, which is equal to marginal cost, and the fee is set equal to the price of the high yield custom
